President Joe Biden is supposed to be able to negotiate with foreign governments. He did serve as VP for eight years. He should know a thing or two about international relations. Specifically, he should know how to deal with Iran.
Yet, he’s struggling. It seems to be a recurring theme: watching Biden struggle with presidential responsibilities.
It’s critical that the United States establish a deal with Iran to suspend its nuclear activities.
Iran has rejected the compromise before Biden has even had a chance to officially offer it. What does that say about how Iran views our president that they’re shutting him down before a negotiation can even begin?
According to Politico, there are a few Biden administration officials who plan to create a new proposal as a way to jumpstart discussions. Time is not on our side, so it’s critical to start some kind of conversation with the Iranian government.
The proposal currently in place is simple. Iran is being asked to halt some of the nuclear activities, such as working on advanced centrifuges and enriching uranium to a 20 percent purity. In exchange, the U.S. will offer relief from some of the economic sanctions in place.
Tehran has not found anything being offered in the past as an acceptable offer. Earlier in the year, a proposal involved providing Iran access to some of its frozen assets in exchange for stopping the 20% enrichment of uranium.
Tehran’s counteroffer was for the U.S. to lift all sanctions and they would halt their uranium enrichment project for one month.
Nice try. Clearly, it’s going to take quite a bit of negotiating in order for Iran to agree to any kind of deal.
According to a recent article by Jerusalem Post, Iran has no plans of stopping its uranium enrichment until the U.S. lifts all sanctions.
The Islamic Republic has been rejecting all U.S. offers recently. They’re clearly not interested in any kind of negotiation.
Biden has to do something – and quickly. Otherwise, we could end up going to war over what Iran is doing with its nuclear power. Since he cannot establish a conversation, it makes him look weak.
The problem is that Biden knows that he looks weak. And that will lead to desperate measures – including alienating our allies just to entice Iran into a negotiation.
We don’t want to make U.S. allies pay the price of our ability to negotiate with Iran. It is critical that Iran be unable to develop a nuclear weapon. Such a thing could be disastrous for many countries around the globe – and since the Iranians are not very agreeable, they can choose to declare war rather than negotiate.
Here’s Biden, begging for negotiations. And each time he begs and offers a substandard offer, it weakens the U.S. position.
There’s a reason why Trump withdrew the country from the Iran nuclear deal. Iran was being non-compliant and it was costing the U.S. too much money. Now, Iran is ignoring the limitations that were placed by the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – which means that they’re enjoying the sanctions relief from the other countries who were a part of the nuclear agreement without holding up their end of the bargain.
Iran has said, in the past, that they’ll return to the JCPOA if the U.S. lifts sanctions.
That doesn’t seem to be the case any longer since Iran isn’t even interested in hearing a proposal. You can’t reject a proposal before it’s been handed to you – yet Iran is playing games with Biden.
Tensions will be on the rise throughout the Middle East until Biden can strike a deal. However, he has to tread cautiously so as not to upset relations with our allies.
We’re depending on Biden to fix things – and he cannot even fix the things that he has broken in our own country.
